Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of Alder — the app and the pages at alderfinance.app. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them.
What Alder is
Alder lets you scan a receipt, split a bill with the people who shared it, share their bill breakdown, request repayment and track payments. Alder organizes who owes what; the money itself moves outside Alder, through whatever you and your friends already use.
What Alder is not
- Not a payment service. Alder never holds, receives, or transmits funds and is not a bank or a money transmitter. Payment links and buttons hand you off to services like Venmo, or you settle up however you like. Those services have their own terms.
- Not a system of record. Splits reflect what you and your friends enter. Alder doesn't verify debts, adjudicate disputes, or guarantee that anyone pays you back.
Alder Plus (optional subscription)
Splitting, item edits, manual assignment and repayment tracking don't require Alder Plus. Alder Plus is an optional monthly subscription that adds smart split suggestions: you describe who shared what, and Alder suggests everyone's share for you to review.
- What you get. 50 actionable smart split suggestions per subscription month. One use is counted when Alder delivers an actionable suggestion for you to review, however many people it assigns and whether or not you apply it; a revised suggestion uses another. Clarifying questions, errors, Review, Apply, Undo and manual edits don't use your allowance. Unused suggestions don't roll over, and there are no overage charges.
- Safety limits. To prevent abuse and runaway costs, smart split has per-account and service-wide limits that can pause suggestions, possibly until the next month. Clarifying questions and errors count toward these limits even though they don't use your suggestions. A pause never uses your remaining suggestions, but unused suggestions still end with the subscription month. You can always split manually; if smart split stays unavailable, contact us.
- Suggestions can be wrong. Suggestions are generated by an AI model from what you type and the bill's item and people names, which are sent to Google's Gemini API as described in the Privacy Policy. The model can misread who had what. Alder's own split math calculates every amount from the assignments, but you are responsible for reviewing each share before you apply it or send a request.
- Billing and renewal. You buy Alder Plus through your Apple Account at the price shown in the App Store before you confirm. It renews automatically each month unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it in your Apple Account subscription settings. Apple handles payment and refunds under its own terms; Alder never sees your payment details.
- Price changes. We may change the price of Alder Plus. A change to an existing subscription is handled through Apple's subscription process, which may notify you or ask for your consent first. You can cancel before a new price applies.
Your account
You need a verified mobile number to use Alder. Keep your number current: it is how your account is secured. You are responsible for activity under your account. You must be at least 18 years old to use Alder.
Texting people you tag
When you choose to send a payment request by text, Alder sends it on your behalf. Only tag people who shared the bill and who you reasonably believe are willing to receive it — the same way you'd text them yourself. Recipients can opt out of all Alder messages at any time by replying STOP, and Alder enforces strict frequency caps and a hard end to reminders for every bill. Don't use Alder to harass, spam, or contact strangers; we may suspend accounts that do.
Acceptable use
Don't break the law with Alder, don't attempt to access other users' data, don't probe or disrupt the service, and don't misrepresent bills or amounts to extract money from people. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
Your content
You own what you put into Alder. You grant us the license needed to operate the service — to store your splits, show rosters to the people in them, extract items from receipts you scan, and deliver your requests.
Disclaimers and limitation of liability
Alder is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Receipt extraction and split calculations can contain errors; you are responsible for reviewing amounts before sending a request and before paying one. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Alder and its operator are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for disputes between you and the people you split bills with, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of $100 or the amount you paid for Alder Plus in the twelve months before the claim.
Termination
You can stop using Alder and delete your account at any time in the app, which deletes your data as described in the Privacy Policy. Deleting your account does not cancel an Alder Plus subscription, because Apple manages it: cancel it in your Apple Account subscription settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, with notice where practicable.
App Store
Because Alder is distributed through Apple's App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to your use of the app.
Changes
If we change these terms, we'll change this page and its effective date, and announce material changes in the app. Continuing to use Alder after a change means you accept it.
